Health Assessment/Nutrition Screening

For the past three years, nurses from the United States have traveled to Hudien Township, Xinyang, Henan Provence.  While there, they have partnered with nursing students from Xinyang and Zhen Zhou Nursing Colleges (2 students per nurse).   This partnership allows the nursing students to learn better how things are done in the United States.

This group has traveled to 3 of the district's primary schools and, utilizing a defined, repeatable protocol, has conducted assessments on 3 classes of students.  These include: measurement of height, weight, head circumference, number of sit-ups completed in a minute, hearing, and an assessment of vision.

The results from the 3 years of data will be analyzed and hopefully used to procure additional health and nutritional resources for these beautiful children.

A wonderful and special "side" benefit to the assessment work done with the nursing students are the relationships which are developed.  Laughter and smiles abound.  Months, and even years, after initial meetings, emails travel back and forth across the internet.  Seeds are planted.
