Health Education

For all of our lives we strive to learn and better ourselves.  Unfortunately for those who are in rural areas, resources are not abundantly available.

China Service Ventures is looking to help fill some of these gaps through service to primary school and nursing students as well as practicing nurses and doctors.

Primary School Students – The health and sanitation conditions at the rural Hudien Township schools are less than desirable.  As a part of the Health & Nutrition Assessment, the nursing students and US Health Team teach the children simple things that can be done to help make them healthier.  During one visit, signs which had been downloaded from the Center for Disease Control (in Simplified Chinese) regarding “Cover Your Cough” were reviewed and hung.  During another visit bowls, bars of soap, and towels were brought to the school.  The nursing students taught their zealous young protégées the 7 steps to correctly wash their hands.  (There are not currently hand washing facilities at these schools.)

Nursing Students – Throughout their participation with the Health Team, Chinese nursing students are provided the opportunity to catch a glimpse of how nursing is done in the United States.  They are actively engaged in conducting the Health Assessments, so in a hands-on manner learn about accuracy, protocol, and best practices.  Brief lectures, followed by a time of practice, are conducted on topics – for example neuro-assessment – to help them broaden their knowledge base.

Practicing Nurses and Doctors – China Service Ventures is using a multi-pronged approach with Chinese nurses and doctors.  During visits by the Health & Nutrition Assessment Team, tours of the medical facilities are given.  Mini-lectures are conducted.  Two American physicians have made multiple visits to Henan Provence during which time more in-depth lectures have been carried out.  They have also accompanied Chinese medical staff on their rounds and provided insight to what they see and how they would approach various patients.
